Online Spotlight: Rex Ray (1956–2015) Small Resin Works

Artist and graphic designer Rex Ray was celebrated for his vibrant collage-pop aesthetic that fused fine art and design with unmistakable flair.

His small resin-coated collages are irresistibly tactile—each a rhythmic composition of color, pattern, and form. Singularly compelling yet mesmerizing in series, they pulse like visual music, echoing the repetition and syncopation that define his larger practice.

A pioneer of digital and graphic design, Rex Ray produced bold imagery for cultural icons including David Bowie, and his designs have appeared on everything from textiles and ceramics to carpets, wristwatches, and even automobiles.

His paintings, collages, and prints have been exhibited in major museums nationwide, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Akron Art Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver.

Ray’s small works—radiant, joyful, and distinctly his own—remain coveted examples of a visionary artist who blurred the lines between art, design, and pure visual pleasure.
